Classes by age
The same four basics, at each age
Pick an age group to see what a class works on.
Ages 5 to 7
Short rounds with a game between each. The basics are taught by showing and copying, so a child who can't yet read can still follow.
Stance: a wide stance held for a count of five
Block: one arm at a time, slow, with a partner
Kick: a front kick against a low pad
Bow: in, out and to a partner
Ages 8 to 10
The same four basics with longer rounds. Students start to join them together and learn their first kata.
Stance: moving forward and back without losing it
Block: left and right, on a count
Kick: front and round kicks against shields
Bow: calling the bow for the row
Ages 11 to 14
A faster class that goes deeper on each basic, with partner drills on pads and longer katas.
Stance: changing stance on a count
Block: a block and a reply as a pair
Kick: balance and aim, kick by kick
Bow: helping the younger groups line up
